Join us for a free cover crop workshop and farm tour at Johnston Farms, a diversified fruit and vegetable farm in Clallam County. Kelly and Christie Johnston will share how they use cover crops and plastic tarping to support soil health, manage weeds, and improve crop production. Clallam Conservation District staff will discuss cover crop selection, planting timing, and management practices.

Guest speakers include Nathan Stacey from Oregon State University and John Bellow from SpringRain Farm and Orchard. Together, they will discuss how to select the right cover crop species based on your production goals and share real-world lessons learned about terminating cover crops and integrating them into working farms. 

Whether you’re planting your first cover crop or looking to improve your management practices, you’ll leave with practical information you can apply this season.

Chicken Care for Beginners!

Interested in raising backyard chickens or improving your flock management skills? Join Washington State University (WSU) Extension and Clallam Conservation District staff for an educational workshop on chicken care on June 29, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the Port Angeles Library.

The focus will be on how to raise a flock from hatched chicks to adults, how to respond to common health issues, mistakes, and misconceptions when caring for chickens, and connecting folks with resources to further build their knowledge. The Clallam CD will be there to discuss coop placement, manure management, water safety, and options for bedding material.

Clallam CD, Clallam County Noxious Weed Control and Olympic National Park are teaming up to tackle Scotch broom along beautiful Lake Crescent on East Beach Road, and we need your help!

Scotch broom is a fast-spreading invasive weed that rapidly crowds out native vegetation. During this event, volunteers and staff will work together to remove Scotch broom using weed wrenches, or by cutting down larger plants when needed. No experience is necessary, training will be provided on-site.
