Description
Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a stunning native groundcover. While it stays very short in stature (an average of 6 to 12 inches in height) it forms a plush, mat-like shrub reaching from widths of 3 to 15 or more feet. It has glossy evergreen leaves, pink clusters of bell-shaped flowers that appear from March to June, and bright red berries that appear as early as July and persist through the winter.
Habitat
Kinnikinnick thrives in full sun to partial shade. It grows best in sandy or well-drained soils, and is drought tolerant.
Beneficial Uses
Kinnikinnick is an excellent choice for landscaping, especially in areas that are difficult to mow. It can aid in erosion control on areas with gentle to steep banks. Kinnikinnick’s pink flowers attract pollinators such as butterflies, bees and hummingbirds and the beautiful red berries are an excellent food source for birds and other wildlife.
