Description

Evergreen huckleberry (Vaccinium ovatum) is a beautiful evergreen shrub whose height can range from 2 to 9 feet tall. It has glossy evergreen leaves, bright pink flowers and edible blue-black berries.

Habitat

Evergreen huckleberry grows best on forest edges and clearings, growing best in partially shaded conditions though they can tolerate full sun to full shade. They require well-drained and acidic soils to become well established.

Beneficial Uses

The bright pink flowers of evergreen huckleberry are wonderful for attracting pollinators, including birds and insects, and the berries are not only an excellent food source for wildlife, but delicious for humans as well. The sweet, edible berries ripen in late summer through fall (August through November), and can be eaten raw, used in cooking or made into jam.
